From Dr. Udani's class, he stressed that servant leadership, kindness, and gratitude are the most important elements of a good leader. I totally agree with what he said.
A servant-leader is one who wants to help others, willing to serve, and take the initiative to take actions for others' benefits. A servant-leader prioritizes others before himself/herself. For me, the best role model of a servant-leader is the Jesus Christ. I learned about Him in my secondary school Sacred Heart Canossian College. He was always there for the people - healing, teaching and leading people to the right path. Not only does he forgive people's mistakes, he also motivates people to pursue the right goal. Moreover, he was willing to sacrifice himself to save the people. He was a great leader. From the Bible, I can learn more about his story and learn to be a better servant-leader.
Starting from this week, my group is going to do the LEAP project "Thought of the Day". We want to bring encouragements and happiness to the UM community, including, but not limited to, the students, the teaching staff, the administrative staff, and the workers. We give them small notes with words of encouragements and inspiring quotes, along with a small gift. We hope that this small act of love can make people around us to feel support and happy.
This project is a very good experience for me to be bold, and to actively show kindness. On the first day of the LEAP, our group felt a bit shy at first, as we did not know how to suddenly start the conversation with the people that we did not know. To overcome the shyness and show our care, firstly we gave out the notes and gifts in groups, and gradually we were braver to talk to anyone. More importantly, I can feel that both the people that we met and our group feel happier with the LEAP activity. Things that make us happy are not the tangible objects, but the actions and inner emotions of love and care.

The most impressing part of last Wednesday’s class is the calling the beloved one to express gratitude and love. I called both my father and my mother, said that I am grateful for all they have done for me, and that I love them. The responses from them are laughing, words such as “stupid girl”, “why are you saying this, shouldn’t you be having class” etc. During the phone call, I can’t control but there were tears rolling down my cheeks. I was overwhelmed with emotions of uncountable gratitude, and the words I said were coming from the deepest part of my heart. Sometimes it is easy to say “thanks” with others, but when it comes to the closest people, it is not a Chinese culture to do so. In my family, we are more used to express love through daily actions, and lack of words. That night, my parents called me and told me how happy they were to receive that phone call.
I think that my parents are the greatest people. Having 4 daughters, my parents love us equally and strive to give us the best of all. They have been working very hard, and at the same time, care about our well-being and growth. Life is harder back then, but they insist to provide the best education for us and letting us to learn different things. Also, starting from university, I live in UM campus and my parents keep bringing homemade soup for me every Wednesday night. There are too many stories in these 20 years that I have kept in memories, that words cannot express the feelings behind these stories. No word but LOVE is the closest word to describe my family. There are never enough thanks that I want to express. Besides contributing back to the family by taking care of my younger sisters and helping with my family’s business, I hope that I can be more expressive toward my family – and this phone call marked the start of change.
